Discover Droitwich Spa

A town shaped by salt

Droitwich Spa is one of Worcestershire's most distinctive historic towns, shaped for centuries by the natural brine found beneath its streets.

The town's salt deposits attracted settlement from Roman times and later helped establish Droitwich as an important centre for salt production.

Today visitors can explore its historic centre, walk beside the canals, discover its spa heritage, enjoy green spaces and visit one of Britain's few remaining open air saltwater swimming pools.

Salt & heritage

More than 2,000 years of salt

Droitwich owes much of its existence to the natural brine beneath the town. Salt production has taken place here for centuries and became one of the area's most important industries.

During the nineteenth century, industrialist John Corbett transformed salt production in Droitwich and helped establish the town's reputation as a spa destination.

The opening of brine baths brought visitors to the town for health treatments and eventually led to the name Droitwich Spa.

The Junction Canal later connected the town with the Worcester and Birmingham Canal. After decades of decline the canal network was restored and reopened, creating new routes for walking, cycling and boating.
