Explore Stourport on Severn

Historic canal basins, riverside walks, boats and a town created around the waterways.

Discover Stourport

A town built around water

Stourport on Severn is one of Worcestershire's most distinctive towns, created around the junction of the Staffordshire and Worcestershire Canal and the River Severn.

The canal arrived in 1771 and transformed what had been a small riverside settlement into a busy inland port. Warehouses, locks and basins developed around the water and much of that historic layout survives today.

Visitors can explore the canal basins, walk beside the River Severn, enjoy Riverside Meadows and discover the shops, cafés and attractions around the town centre.

Canal heritage

A town born from the canal age

Stourport's modern history began with the completion of the Staffordshire and Worcestershire Canal in 1771. The canal connected with the River Severn and created an important new transport hub.

Basins, locks, warehouses and wharves developed rapidly as goods were transferred between canal boats and vessels travelling along the river.

Unlike many towns that simply had a canal passing through them, Stourport effectively grew around the waterways themselves, giving it a particularly distinctive layout and history.

The River Severn runs immediately alongside the town and remains an important part of Stourport's identity.

Riverside Meadows provides open green space and paths close to the water, while the bridge and riverside attractions create one of the town's best known views.

The river below Stourport is navigable for pleasure boats and links the town with Worcester and the wider Severn navigation.

Town centre

From the basins into the town

Stourport's centre developed directly alongside its waterways, so the canal basins and town streets remain closely connected.
